Final Fantasy XI Gil, is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed and published by Square Enix as part of the Final Fantasy series. It has been over five years since it launched all over the world. SE noted that it still has a strong user base of around 500,000 subscribers. Four expansions for the game have been released, capitalizing on the game's success.

But Square Enix Boss Yoichi re-affirmed that while Final Fantasy XI was still quite profitable for the company, it couldn't last forever, during an address to investor last month.

Speaking of this "transition", Wada says that, as FFXI Gil winds down, "the question is where do we go from here, and we are currently developing a post-FFXI Gil flagship title". Interesting that he calls it a "flagship" title, suggesting that instead of just switching to a more casual-friendly MMO like the company's existing Nicotto Town, it'll be something more substantial.
